Artemisia Gentileschi as a historical figure: Her influence on contemporary feminist art

This thesis focuses on Artemisia Gentileschi's life, the characteristics of the period she lived in, and the reflections of her influence in contemporary feminist art. Beginning with the emergence of Baroque art, the study examines Gentileschi's life and artistic style. It also discusses other female artists of the period and addresses the challenges of being a woman artist at that time. Following this, the thesis explores Gentileschi's personal history and artistic works, and analyzes her impact on contemporary art. Various examples from scholarly articles and contemporary artists are presented. This study helps to reveal how certain contemporary artists establish a connection with Artemisia Gentileschi and how her legacy has been positioned within the writing of art history. Artemisia Gentileschi was a painter who lived in Italy between 1593 and 1653.She has an influence on contemporary art, women artists, and Feminist Art. In the 17th century, in a society dominated by male authority in all areas, Artemisia was the first female artist to be officially accepted into the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence. Artemisia's success, along with her defiance of the norms of her time by making such subjects the core material of her art, has led to her being regarded as one of the pioneers of feminist art. By portraying the female body not merely as an object of flawless beauty but as something existing, acting, and dynamic, she demonstrated that the female body is not solely intended for aesthetic pleasure. Through her ability to convey emotions between flesh, body, and soul, she has become an artist of great interest to many contemporary artists and writers, and she is frequently referenced in art historical discourse. This study presents a comprehensive examination of the subject through various sources, including published theses, books, journals, and articles.
