Thesis of end of art in Arthur Danto's aesthetics understanding

Arthur Danto, one of the contemporary aesthetic theorists, put forward the idea of the end of art by focusing on the changes that took place in the world of art in the sixties. Andy Warhol's work plays an important role in his reaching the idea of the end of art. By putting Warhol's work at the center, Danto claims that art has come to an end. Although this thesis makes an impression as the end of art in practical terms, it has a positive meaning for Danto. By reaching the end, art gets rid of the domination of historical narratives and transfers its self-realization mission to philosophy. From this point on, the post-historical period begins which Danto sees as a philosophical phase. Since there is no obligation to adhere to any principle or narrative in this period, both art and artist are free. These comments of Danto on art are important in terms of art theories. The main objective of this thesis is examine the idea of the end of art, which has an important place in Arthur Danto's philosophy of art. This study consists of three different perspectives: the end of art in the Hegelian line, the end of art in terms of historiography, and the end of art as the beginning of the post-historical period. In the light of these three perspectives, the idea of the end of art will be examined and it will be tried to reveal what this idea means for Danto.
