Abstract (EN)
Propofol which is an antioxidant is shown to protect heart, liver, kidney, lung and brain tissues against peroxidation. Desflurane preserves hepatic blood flow and is less toxic, so it is preferred in hepatobiliary surgery. In this study rat liver was damaged with acetaminophen and effects of propofol and desflurane on oxidative stress were compared. 80 male Wistar rats were randomised to 4 Groups. First Group was given acetaminophen+desflurane (Group D), 2nd acetaminophen+propofol (Group P) and 3rd acetaminophen (Group A). No drug was given to 4th Group (Group K). 5 rats from each group were sacrificed at 6th, 12th, 24th and 48th hours (T1,T2,T3,T4). Blood was drawn and liver tissue were extracted so that ALT, AST, GST, total cholesterol/ HDL cholesterol, MDA and histopatologic damage were analysed. In Group A at T1, T2, T3, in Group D at T1, T3, T4 and in Group P at T1, T2 times histopatologic grade was worse compared to Group K. AST values were higher at T2, T4 times in Group P; at T4 in Group D compared to Groups A and K. ALT values were higher in Groups D, P and A at all times compared to Group K. Number of PNL, GST, Total choleserol/ HDL cholesterol, MDA values were similar between Groups.Propofol and desflurane caused both high aminotransferase levels and histopatological grade which indicates liver damage. We concluded that, to assess the effects on liver, of the anesthetic agents that are commonly used in anesthesia practice, needs further experimental study.
