Serum total sialic acid levels in overt and subclinical hypothyroid patients and its relationship with atherosclerosis risc factors

It has been showed in several studies that overt or subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) is associated with atherogenesis. Serum total sialic acid (SA) concentration is assessed as an up to date risc indicator of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. It has been seen that it?s over normal values in several atherosclerotic diseases and correlated with some atherogenic risc factors. It was aimed to investigate about how SA levels are effected in overt or subclinical hypothyroidism and how it?s associated with other atherosclerosis risc factors because there is no study about these topics, though SA is intensively studied in recent years.Sixty hypotyroid (35 subclinical and 25 overt hypotyroid) and 30 eutyroid person who were between 18-50 ages, had no defined cardiovascular risc factors, newly diagnosed and had not been treated yet were enrolled to the study. minimum 8 hours? fasting blood samples were taken and mean platelet volume (MPV), TSA, serum homocystein and hsCRP was measured in addition to routin biochemical measurements. Carotid artery CIMT measurements were performed by ultrasonography after thyroid probing.When the two groups were compared for atherogenesis risc factors, DBP (70.2±6.9 and 76.4±10 mmHg, p= 0,001), CIMT (0.58±0.06 and 0.62±0.12 mm, p=0,046), Total-C (176.5±31.4 and 203.7±50.6 mg/dL, p=0,003), LDL-C (107.6±25.9 and 128.5±41.2 mg/dL, p=0,004), TG (82.4±41.6 and 128.1±82.9 mg/dL, p=0,001) levels were significantly increased in patients. Other atherogenesis related measurements such as SKB, uric acid, hsCRP and homocystein levels were also increased in patients, but not statistically significant. Serum total SA levels were higher in hypotyroid patients compared to controls but the difference was not statistically significant.In patients? group a moderate positive correlation between CIMT and SA was determined (p=0,002 r=0,385) as it was between SA and uric asit (p=0,03 r=0,292).SA and CIMT were positively correlated (p=0,005 r=0,464) in SH patients such like SA and hsCRP were (p=0,04 r=0,407) in hypotyroid patients.Though several atherogenesis risc indicators were found to be higher in hypotyroid patients compared to the control group, some of them, including sialic acid, did not show statistical significance. However, the existence of correlation between SA and some indicators like CIMT, hsCRP and üric acid in patients? group suggests that it can be an atherogenesis indicator in hypotyroid patients. Large and prospective studies are needed in this area to obtain enough evidence.
