Comparison of the effect of using different irrigation activation systems on the amount of irrigation solution extruded from the apical in root canals with severe curvature

Abstract (EN)

This study aims to compare the effects of SII, PUI, EDDY, PIPS, and SWEEPS irrigation activation methods on the amount of irrigation solution extruded from the apical in root canals with excessive curvature. In the current study, 75 teeth with a single root and a single canal with a degree of curvature between 20 and 40 degrees were included. Root canal curvatures were determined with the help of buccolingual and mesiodistal radiographs using the ImageJ (ImageJ 1.48v; National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA) program. Root canal preparation of all specimens was completed with a Resiproc Blue R25 file (VDW, Munich, Germany). The samples were randomly divided into 5 groups according to irrigation activation methods (n=15); SII, PUI, EDDY, PIPS, and SWEEPS. In all samples, the irrigation activation procedure was applied for 90 seconds using a total of 6 ml of 2.5% NaOCl (Wizard). The apically extruded irrigation solution was collected using the Myers Montgomery method. The data on the amount of apically extruded irrigation solution were statistically analyzed at a P<0.05 significance level using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney-U tests. While the highest mean irrigation solution extrusion was associated with the SII and PUI groups, less irrigation solution extrusion was observed in the PIPS group compared to the other groups. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean amount of solution extruded from the apical among all irrigation activation methods tested (P>0.05).
