Abstract (EN)

Today, various methods such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, immunotherapy, gene therapy, and alternative treatments are commonly used in cancer treatment. Chemotherapy is the most frequently utilized method; however, its major drawback is the damage it causes to healthy cells while targeting cancerous ones. This has led to an increased interest in plant-based drugs that offer lower toxicity. Currently, 60% of the drugs used in cancer treatment are derived from natural products, with a significant portion being plant-based. Compounds such as vinca alkaloids, taxanes, and epipodophyllotoxins, derived from plants, are widely used in chemotherapy. In this study, the anticancer effects of Astragalus aduncus plant extract, commonly known as "geven" in Turkish, on prostate cancer will be investigated. After obtaining different extracts of the plant, their cytotoxic effects on prostate cancer cells and normal prostate cells will be evaluated using the MTT assay. The most effective extract will then be further analyzed for its apoptotic effects on cancer cells using flow cytometry with annexin V and the fluorescent acridine orange method. Additionally, the content of the plant extract will be analyzed using LC-MS/MS to identify the active compounds. This research aims to demonstrate the potential of Astragalus aduncus extract as a chemotherapeutic agent in cancer treatment.
