Ata Terzibaşı's Kirkuk dialect Turkman Dictionary (Introduction, review, text)

The study of the vocabulary of the Turkmen language is of critical importance for understanding the richness and historical development of the language. Dictionaries not only reflect contemporary language usage but also preserve linguistic features from past periods, serving as a valuable resource for linguistic research. In this context, the three-volume work titled Kerkük Ağzı Türkmence Sözlük (Kerkuk Dialect Turkmen Dictionary), written by Ata Terzibaşı in 2011, holds great significance as it reflects the linguistic heritage of the Turkmen community in Kerkuk. In this study, the three volumes of Kerkük Ağzı Türkmence Sözlük were first transcribed, and the work was analyzed from a lexicographical perspective. The lexicographical examination included a detailed study of the dictionary's type, its holistic structure, its componential structure, and its headwords. Subsequently, the sample sentences provided in the work were analyzed in terms of phonetic phenomena specific to the Kerkuk dialect (vowel-consonant harmony, sound changes, etc.). As a result of these analyses, the phonological features identified in these sentences were scientifically demonstrated to reflect the unique phonetic diversity and linguistic richness of the Turkmen dialect of Kerkuk. Following the introduction, the study consists of five main sections. The first section provides a brief overview of Ata Terzibaşı's life and works. The second section discusses the concept of lexicography and the historical development of the Turkish lexicographical tradition. The third section is dedicated to the lexicographical analysis of Kerkük Ağzı Türkmence Sözlük, while the fourth section examines the phonological characteristics of the Kerkuk dialect through sample sentences. The final section contains the transcription of the work.
