"Foreign land" theme in Ataturk Period (1923-1938) of Turkish poetry

In this study, "foreign land" which is one of the most essential themes of Ataturk Period of Turkish Poetry has been widely discussed. For that purpose poetry books and periodicals published in 1923-1938 period have been scrutinized.In the introduction of our study, it has been given information about the progress of Turkish poetry and poets and foreign land concept has been explained in detail. The review section of the study divided into two main categories including Material Foreign Land and Spiritual Foreign Land. In the first part, the poems have been analyzed under the headings of The Reasons of Material Foreign Land and The Result of Material Foreign Land. The causes of the material foreign land in this period were determined as War, Captivity - Exile - Imprisonment, Travel - Study, Ideology. And the poems were classified in this way. The emotions caused by pain, homesickness, loneliness, alienation, feeling continuously abroad were established as the results of the material foreign land. Under these headings the poems were evaluated from the point of how those emotions were treated. In the second section, the poems have been categorized in two subheadings: Conviction Thought in the Current World and Desire of the Soul to Return the First Source (Sufi Homesickness). And metaphysic aspects of homesickness and its reflection to poetry were evaluated. In the Conclusion a general evaluation of our study was made. In the Bibliography section the books and journals including poetry, which had foreign land theme, and other sources used were listed.
