Abstract (EN)

Cinema, which is a narrative tool, interacts with many different disciplines such as literature, music and dance in order to enrich its narrative. In this thesis, it is tried to explain that in the cinema of auteur director Yeşim Ustaoğlu, dance is imagined as a harbinger of death. In this context, it is examined how the dance sequences in the films of the director Ustaoğlu are coded as the harbinger of death and how they are processed with the use of cinematography elements. In the transfer of dance in the cinema to the audience through the body, it is tried to be explained within the framework of sociological and anthropological paradigms, how the common visual representation of the movie heroes is constructed and transferred to the audience regardless of their class positions and identities. While the research question is what kind of images the dance scenes in Ustaoğlu's cinema carry, the Christian Metz method is used as an analysis method, within the framework of the semiotic theory based on the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure. What makes this study important is that, in the literature review on the research subject, no study on dance was found in the cinema of director Yeşim Ustaoğlu. With this study, it is aimed to evaluate the data on the coexistence of dance and cinema in Ustaoğlu cinema and to contribute to the literature in future studies.
