Abstract (EN)

The primary aim of the thesis is to examine the effects of European Union (EU)culture policies on European identity and also to find an answer to the question whether EUcould create an European Identity as a complementary identity with its culture policies or not.In order to find the answer of this question the thesis is devided into five chapters. In the firstchapter the main objectives and the content of the thesis is determined.The second chapter provides a theoretical framework for the thesis. Nation, nationstate, identity, culture and European identity concepts are examined. Also, the historicaldevelopment of European identity is discussed.In the third chapter, arise of the EU culture policies and the periodic development ofthe EU culture policies process?s effects on European Identity is displayed. The chapterfocuses firstly on EU agreements and then Eurobarometers.In the forth chapter, the reflection of EU culture polities on Turkey is examined.Cultural harmony of EU and Turkey as a candidate country is discussed. In the final chapter,concluding comments on the essential question of the thesis and how and how much EUculture policies is effective to create and strengthen European identity are given.Key Words: Concept of Identity, Concept of Culture, European Identity, EurpeanUnion Culture Policies, Eurobarometer Results, Cultural Harmony of Turkey and EU
