Discourse analysis of new migrant wave policies of European Union leaders: Examples of Germany, United Kingdom and France

Due to the effect of globalization, it can be seen that the structures which can be defined as supranational political unions like the European Union avert the policies produced by the nation states and produce policies for an ideal and purpose. "European Citizenship" and "free movement", which can be seen as the basic values of the European Union, are among the most effective examples of the policies implemented by supranational associations. At this point, it should be kept in mind that these policies have been produced in the common ideal framework within the favourable positive climate and the mutual interests. It is really important what kind of changes and transformations will be seen at the point where the facts supported by the European Union, such as "European Citizenship", "European Ideal", "freedom of movement", "freedom" and "multiculturalism", contradict the interests of the member States. Although the European Union, whose origins date back to the 1950s, produced common policies such as Euro Area and the right of free movement, it was not able to produce a common foreign and security policy for the Serbian-Bosnian War in the mid-1990s in Europe. Immediately after this, the West part of the European Union has become a focal point for those fleeing from the former Soviet Union countries and the instability in the Middle East. Therefore, the European Union has tried to produce common policies on immigration. At this juncture, the phenomenon of migration began to contradict the national interests of the member states of the Union. In particular, the turmoil of immigrants entering the Union through the eastern and southern borders of the European Union, such as Greece, Bulgaria and Italy, has led to some dissension within the Union. Germany, France and Britain's domestic and foreign policy sayings and even the statements related to the European Union's freedom and multicultural policies began to change when the immigration wave of the Syrian War reached to the borders of the European Union. The changes in the rhetoric of leaders have also led to changes in the policies and legal arrangements developed by the European Union against migrants. In this research, the discourse analyses of the statements of the German, French and British leaders related to the influx of the migration deriving from the Syrian war have been analyzed by interpreting of the news published in Reuters' official website including 2015-2016-2017. The discourses of the leaders have been examined with discourse analysis technique. Moreover, content analysis technique has also been used.
