The relationship between music and politics in European

ABSTRACT The study titled "The Relationship Between Music and Politics in European History" focuses on the formation of music in the context of changing and transforming politics and its effects on politics and society. The effects of the developments in European politics from Ancient Greek history to music World War II are discussed in the context of the composers and their works. Music, which has an important place in the cultural life of the society in the power struggle that exists in class societies, has attracted the attention of the ruling classes. In European history, music was supported by the political actors of the church, aristocracy and bourgeoisie and used for ideological purposes. Music, whose scientific foundations date back to the Ancient Greek Period, were dominated by church power as an indispensable part of the worship of the Christian faith in medieval feudal society. With the reform, the Christian faith was disintegrated and music was used in the church, educational institutions and choirs formed under the leadership of Luther of Protestantism. In the Age of Enlightenment, music was used in aristocratic palaces, in bourgeois mansions that undertook art patronage and churches. Since the French Revolution, with the spread of nationalist ideas throughout Europe, the composers of each nation composed works by focusing on the folk melodies of their own nation, and music as a cultural power was used effectively in the creation of nation awareness. Contrary to the enlightenment ideals of the Industrial Revolution that took place in the 19th century that aimed to liberate the individual, capitalism that emerged as a system that enslaves the individual, Socialism that emerged as a reaction to it, ideologies of Nationalism on the nationalist axis and Anti-Semitism as ethnic nationalism, composers produced works with romantic aesthetics. Wars and economic crises in the 20th century deeply affected European society. Music works were composed in line with the ideologies of capitalism, fascism and communism, and political actors used music effectively for propaganda purposes.
