The effects of the European Green Deal on Turkey in context of energy

The European Union's energy policy has been shaped by efforts to ensure security of energy supply and to improve environmental sustainability. Throughout its history, the EU has taken significant steps to diversify energy sources and strengthen incentives for renewable energy. In particular, with the Maastricht Treaty in the early 1990s and the Lisbon Strategy in the early 2000s, the EU harmonised its energy policies to prioritise sustainability and energy efficiency objectives. The European Green Deal stands out as a comprehensive strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This agreement aims to integrate economic growth with sustainability by increasing the use of renewable energy sources in sectors such as energy, transport, industry and agriculture. Initiatives such as the Fit for 55 package and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism are central to the EU's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency. Turkey has focused on aligning with the European Green Deal within the framework of its trade and political relations with the EU. It is developing strategies to harmonize its energy policies with EU standards, increase the use of renewable energy sources, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions. The aim of this study is to examine the evolution of the EU's energy policies, the impact of the European Green Deal on the energy sector and the impact of the Green Deal on Turkey's energy policies. Document analysis will be used in the study within the framework of qualitative research methodology. Future collaborations will contribute to establishing a balanced relationship between energy security, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. Moreover, Turkey's active role in this transition will be a critical step toward ensuring stability and sustainability in regional and global energy policies.
