Abstract (EN)

The First World War broke out as a result of the power struggle of European States, but it affected not only Europe but the whole world. The states in question opened fronts in various parts of the world to divide the power of their rivals. One of the fronts opened in the First World War, also known as the 'Great War', and which affected not only the warring states but also many others, and perhaps the most important one, is the Dardanelles Front. The Dardanelles Front was opened with the naval attacks that started on 19 February 1915 under the leadership of England. When the Allied Powers, who made use of their large and powerful ships to pass the Dardanelles by sea, suffered great losses in the great attack they carried out on March 18, 1915, they gave up the idea of forcing the strait only from the sea and decided to make terrestrial landings. After the preparations, the terrestrial landings started on 25 April 1915. In addition to the British and French soldiers, soldiers brought from their colonies served in these landings. Among these colonial soldiers there were Australians. Australians were able to take initiative and act according to the situation due to the difficult geography they grew up in. These features provided them great benefits on the Çanakkale Front. They did not wait for orders to fulfill their duties and they did their best to reach their goal. Although they could not completely fulfill the task given to them in the landings consisting of two stages, they largely fulfilled the challenging tasks assigned to them. In this way, they made their names known to the whole world, even though they were defeated in the war. The Çanakkale Front resulted in the undisputed superiority of the Turkish side and brought about the founding staff of the Republic of Turkey. The path of many soldiers and politicians who would later establish the Turkish Republic passed through Çanakkale. However, the Dardanelles Front played an important role in the emergence of not only the Turkish side but also Australia as a nation. The nationalist sentiments of the Australians, which were integrated with England in social, cultural, historical etc. areas, strengthened after this war and a nation that had just recognized itself began to move towards maturity. Anzac Day is celebrated in Australia on April 25, when the landings on the Dardanelles began. The struggle of the Turkish side at the Çanakkale Front also sets an important example for the nations that resisted colonialism later on. As a result, although the Dardanelles Front provided great gains to the Turkish nation, it has also had important consequences for Australia, which was on the losing side.
