Natural disaster in vilâyet in Aidin

Abstract (EN)
In the second part of the 19th century, Aydın vilayat (province) witnessed many natural disasters, such as earthquake, grasshopper invasion, drought, flood, freeze, hail, storm and stroke of lightning. These disasters not only affected agriculture, but also caused deaths, losses, droughts, epidemics, economical crises, inflation, environmental problems and problems with transportation etc. What had to be done following those disasters cost both time and money for local and central governments.This study examines and shows what and how natural disasters affected Aydın vilayat and how local and central governments managed to deal with them, what measures they took to avoid great harms or damages further crises could cause to people, economy, government etc. It also analyzes what impact natural disasters had on relations between officials and local people and how central and local governments approached toward victims in post-disaster periods.
