Abstract (EN)

This thesis study consists of three parts, taking the "Thomass Scheff Catharsis Theory" of the realization process of "catharsis", which is a psycho-ethical concept, specifically to Ayin-i Cem music. In the first chapter, the etymological and philosophical origins of the concept of catharsis; psychological, cultural and religious interpretation; Thomass Scheff Triple Catharsis theory, elements of tragic art and the relationship between catharsis and music are mentioned. In the second part, the characteristics of the Alevi-Bektashi communities, their philosophies, lifestyles, historical processes, traditions and customs, Ayin-i Cem ceremonies are emphasized. In the third part, the relationship between catharsis and speech through elegies in Ayin-i Cem ceremonies; On the other hand, through the semahs, the relationship between catharsis-lyric, mode, course, rhythm has been discussed and embodied with analyzes. According to Aristotle, the purpose of the tragedies in which catharsis takes place is to create feelings of pity and fear, as well as to bring people to spiritual serenity, as well as to purify them from passions. Catharsis, apart from its first meaning, has become a concept with a predominant religious aspect over time. Therefore, when catharsis is supported by religious feelings as well as evoking feelings of pity and fear, its realization has become even more of a phenomenon. Ayin-i Cem ceremonies, in which the aforementioned elements come into existence, are Alevi-Bektashi religious rituals supported by music, religious dances and prayers while spiritual purification takes place. As a result of the analyzes made in this way, it has been seen that musical works and religious dances, which are the sub-components of Ayin-i Cem ceremonies, have a cathartic effect on people.
