An investigation of Azerbaijani folk musics seven mean tunes

The folk musics of the Azerbaijani people, a branch of the Turkish race, have been present for centuries, and are now accepted as a from of Turkish music, too. Even though it seems different in style, this form of music is still alive in the North-eastern Anatolia, especially in and around Kars, Ardahan and İğdır. Thinking that the Azerbaijani accent is spoken there, it seems inevitable that the Azerbaijani style has been reflected into the music of the region. Types and forms of Turkish music are scientifically examined today. Should we think that Azerbaijani music is regarded as one of the branches of Turkish music, it becomes a necessity, to our way of thinking, that Azerbaijani music be examined. Azerbaijani, folk music is composed of seven main modes. Even though tampere system (the sound system used in the Western music) is used to express these modes theoretically, it is seen when the works are examined that full sound interval is divided into four equal parts, not two. But this case is ignored while expressing these modes theoretically. The use of these koma sounds (each of these four parts) is exactly left to the singer or player while being performed. In this case, setting out from the the'sis that "Where theory and practice coincide, pratice is valid", we confront with one of the mostly- ignored problems of the music; namely, the need to take into consideration this conflict and to rebuild it. Examining these seven basic modes in the Azerbaijani music, we have seen that these modes seem similar to the mode in Turkish music; some through their names and some through their influences. It is this need to reveal the relationships between these two musics that makes the aim of this study to study on that matter.
