Abstract (EN)

Silymarin is widely used in treatment of liver diseases of varying origins due to its proven hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties. But, pharmacokinetic studies have shown the biopharmaceutical limitations of this agent as improper diffusion in the tissue, poor solubility in water, and decomposition in the intestine. In this study we aimed to formulate silymarin solid lipid nanoparticles and to investigate the hepatoprotective effects on experimentally damaged liver tissue by D-galactosamine/tumour necrosis factor alpha application. Based upon our investigation results histologic and biochemical findings, it can be concluded that Silymarin solid lipid nanoparticles significantly reduced D-galactosamine/tumour necrosis factor alpha-induced hepatotoxicity, which suggested improved bioactivity compared to silymarin. In conclusion, Silymarin solid lipid nanoparticles could be a useful system for the delivery of poorly water-soluble Sm, apart from providing favourable hepatic protection.
