Regional cooperation in the Balkans and the role of South-East Europe cooperation process (SEECP)

Balkan countries took steps towards political and economic union after gaining their independence with a view towards gaining recognition in Europe and developing future policies. This region was called South-Eastern Europe and steps were taken to implement European projects to achieve objectives. Initial regional and multiparty collaborations were consolidated under the South-East Europe Cooperation Process (SEECP), which was supported by Turkey and many other countries and organizations. This study first investigates the cooperation efforts between former Yugoslavian countries to establish independence and gain recognition on an international level. EU support provided for these policies was examined in phases corresponding to the steps taken by Balkan countries towards economic cooperation in South-East Europe. Secondly, the political, economic and security aspects of the SEECP are discussed. The political and economic support provided by Turkey to Balkan countries is summarized together with outcomes. The study also discusses examples towards the applicability of economic and social cooperation in South-East Europe, and outlines next steps. The support of international players as well as the nations involved in such regional organizations are explained. Finally, it is explained how Balkan states that have become EU member states have had significant influence on how the cooperation is implemented.
