.Obesity and obesity associated metabolic disorders are greatly linked to morbidity and mortality. Bariatric surgery (BS) has been established as an effective means of weight loss, improvement of co-morbidity for morbid obese. This study was held to determine weight loss, dietary intake and habits, some biochemical parameters of 30 patients (14 male and 16 female) after bariatric surgery within a follow-up duration of six months and over in a hospital in Gaziantep, Turkey.Demographic characteristics, nutritional habits, consumption frequency of foods and physical activity levels, 24-hour dietary intake recalls were determined. Before and after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) some anthropometric measurements were made. Routinely done biochemical and hematological analysis [fasting blood glucose, insulin level, HbA1c, total cholesterol, low (LDL) and high density HDL) cholesterol, serum iron, hemoglobin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), B12] of the subjects were analyzed.Percentages of subjects between the ages of 30-44 and 45 years and over were 56,7% and 26,6, respectively. Before LSG 52,9%of the subjects had type 2 diabetes, 23,5% had nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, 5,9% had hypertension. Aremission was observed in73,3% patients after surgeryand 53,3% were using food supplements (82,4% protein hydrolysates and 17,6% multivitamin and minerals). Mean energy intakes were 728,2±250,8 and 828,8±257,1 kcal for males and females, respectively. Percentages of energy from carbohydrates, protein and fats were 32,9±12,6, 24,2±8,1 and 42,9±12,2% for males, 32,9±9,7, 22,4±7,2 and 44,6±8,8% for males, respectively.Body weight and BMI of subjects before and after surgery were 139,9±29,8 and 98,3±17,8 kg (mean loss: 29,7%; p<0,05),42,9±8,5 kg/m2and 30,7±5,8 kg/m2 (p<0,05) for males, 109,3±15,4 and 71,8±12,8 kg (mean loss: 34,3%; p<0,05), 41,0±5,3and 27,0±4,9 kg/m2 (p<0,05) for females, respectively. Reductions in all anthropometric measurements were observed, but no significant differences were found. Statistically significant reductions in ALT levels in males (p=0,007, p<0,05) and insulin (p=0,005, p<0,05), total cholesterol (p=0,016, p<0,05), LDL-K (p=0,004, p<0,05), ALT (p=0,004, p<0,05) levels in females were observed. LSG significantly improves body weight, anthropometric measurements, biochemical parameters and morbidity in long-term follow-up.
