The impact of preoperative tele-nursing education on the anxiety and patient satisfaction in the Bariatric Surgery

Introduction: Hospitalization and surgery lead to anxiety in individuals. In obesity, depression is one of the psychological problems. Satisfaction levels of individuals are differentiated by tele-nursing education which can be used in coping with anxiety and depression. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the levels of anxiety and depression levels and the satisfaction levels of obese patients who informed preoperative tele-nursing training. Material and Method: The sample of the study consisted of 72 patients who accepted obesity surgery in a private foundation university hospital in Istanbul on 09/02/2017-02/09/2017. One day before the operation, patients were trained by telephone. Socio-demographic form, HADS and Inpatient Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire were used for data collection. In SPSS 22.0 program, descriptive statistical analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, Mann-Whitney U Test and One-Way Anova Test were used at 95% confidence interval and p< 0.05 significance level. Results: In the study, 65.3% of the participants were female, 63.9% were university graduates, 59.7% were married, 54.2% were not hospital statements and 83.3% were living with their family. The mean age was 35.69±10.9 years. There was no significant difference between the socio-demographic characteristics of the participants and HADS scores (p>0.05). There was a significant difference between surgical experience and anxiety scores (p<0.05). Although there was no significant relationship between the socio-demographic characteristics and satisfaction scores, the satisfaction scores were high (p>0.05). There was a negative correlation between the mean age and satisfaction scores but it was not significant (p>0.05). The relationship between depression and satisfaction score median was positive and significant (p<0.05). The relationship between anxiety and satisfaction score median was positive but not significant (p>0.05). 98.6% of the participants received information about treatment and care by nurses and 95.8% of them considered the service provided in the hospital as good. Conclusion and Suggestions: In our study, anxiety and depression scores were lower and satisfaction scores were higher. It can be said that tele-nursing education is effective.
