Investigation of the effect of communication skills of basketball classification officials on problem solving processes

Basketball, with the changes made since the day it was designed, appeals to a large audience by taking its current form. Considering this sport branch on the field with players, coaches and administrators, and the viewers outside the field, basketball referees can control a competition, establish a trusting attitude and provide a good management, and a good and quality communication with the people. In addition, the communication skills of basketball referees who take part in competitions, as well as their abilities to solve problems that may arise before, during and after the competition, are extremely important. In this study, it has been investigated whether the communication skills of basketball class officials have an impact on problem solving skills. The sample of the research consists of 186 referees who were active in the 2019-2020 season. The survey method was used as a data collection tool within the scope of the research. The research includes Communication Skills Scale (Korkut Owen & Bugay, 2014), Problem Solving Scale (Heppner & Petersen, 1982; Akt: Şahin, Şahin & Heppner, 1993) and Personal Information Form. The communication skill scale used in the study was found to be highly reliable (, 909) and the problem-solving scale was reliable (, 746). SPSS 22 program was used in the analysis of the data obtained from the research. After the frequencies of the data were taken, frequency, normality, independent samples t-test, one-way variance, correlation and regression analyzes were performed respectively. Relationships between the demographic information of the referees participating in the research and their communication skills and problem solving skills were sought. Significant differences were found between the communication skills and problem solving skills of basketball referees participating in the research. It was observed that there was a statistically significant and positive relationship between the communication skills of basketball referees and all sub-dimensions of problem solving scales. As a result; It was determined that there was a significant difference between the problem solving and communication skills of basketball referees participating in the research and there was a significant and positive relationship between all sub-dimensions of both scales. As the communication skills of the referees increase, their problem solving skills increase in parallel. Keywords:Referee, Basketball Referee, Communication Skill, Problem Solving
