ABSTRACTTHE EFFECTS OF SOCIO-CULTURAL LIFEON THE CONTACT IMPROVISATIONSINCE IT?S BEGINNING TO THE DATESernaz DEMİRELIn this thesis study, it is questioned how the contact improvisation action form, whichtook shape in 1970s? social and cultural environment, has taken shape with thechanging values in the period up until now. The features of contact improvisationaction form are stressed by asking the question ?Do the changing life standards affectthe action form?".It is of a structure that includes contact improvisation?s both social dance andexperimental dance features. It is about the social and cultural structure of the periodby covering culture, dance relationship and contact in American society.It is necessary to look at the development process of modern dance history tounderstand the changing values relating to action and to make comparisons. For thisreason, by touching on the development process of modern dance history, thechoreographers that prepared the grounds for the formation of contact improvisationare examined.Contact improvisation has taken shape with postmodern understanding.Consequently, while explicating the choreographers and formations that preparedgrounds for its emerging, comparisons are made with different action forms so as todefine contact improvisation as an action form.As a result, it is observed by using the method of making comparisons and watchingthe videos that include contact improvisation performances that, within the frame ofchanging understandings in the period since 1980s to the date and apart from basicaction form features, the understandings of the period when contact improvisationemerged have changed and contact improvisation has been accepted as a form withinmodern dance technique.Keywords: Contact improvisation, action form, socio-cultural, modern dance.
