Abstract (EN)

Türkiye, located at the intersection of three continents and hosting diverse ecosystems, harbors high biodiversity. Among this richness, mammals hold particular importance due to their ecological roles and status as indicator species. However, many species are threatened by habitat loss and human activities. Especially the distribution of small mammals remains insufficiently studied, and owl pellet analysis serves as an effective method to address this gap. In this study, 267 Tyto alba (barn owl) pellets collected from different habitats in Sason district were examined. Analyses revealed remains of 529 individuals. At the species level, Meriones tristrami (45%), Microtus guentheri (25%), Mus musculus (20%), and Crocidura suaveolens (10%) were identified. Morphometric measurements of the pellets showed a significant relationship between the number of individuals and pellet dimensions. The mean number of individuals per pellet was 1.98 ± 0.62, with small pellets usually containing a single individual, while larger ones contained two or three. The findings highlight the diversity and abundance of small mammals in Sason, providing valuable insights into local community structures. This study contributes to filling a significant gap in the knowledge of small mammals in southeastern Türkiye and offers a scientific basis for future conservation and management strategies.
