A folkloric analysis on monted javelin tradition of Bayburt

Using their skills such as throwing arrows and spears on horseback, the Turks established superiority over their enemies in wars. When there was no war, they repeated and developed these skills as a sport in drug hunting, naives and festivals. It is possible to divide the sports that the Turks have done into two groups as those equestrian sports and without horses. Among the equestrian sports, it is seen that the sport that best reflects the spirit of war is the javelin sport. In the javelin sport, the rider must move as a whole with his horse. The rider sprints his horse and throws his javelin, then maneuvers hard and flees. Leaving the reins on his horse, he throws a javelin or bends next to his horse to avoid the opponent's javelin. When we look at these practices in the making of the javelin sport, the viewer thinks that this sport is a preliminary preparation for the war. Bayburt is among the oldest provinces in Turkey where the javelin on the horseback game is played. In this study, besides the history of javelin on the horseback tradition in Bayburt and the way this sport is played, the traditional methods used in the region in javelin horse breeding, the folk veterinary practices for the treatment of the diseases of the javelin horses, the local practices related to the clothing of the athletes and the javelin horses, and the oral oral practices related to the equestrian javelin sport. cultural elements were brought together using compilation, observation and participant observation methods. In this respect, the study is a qualitative study and data is collected through compilation, observation and participatory observation methods. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the javelin on the horseback tradition in Bayburt is continued through clubs despite some difficulties, especially economic, and it is a suitable environment for the traditional the javelin on the horseback culture to be kept alive and to be transferred to future generations if there is governmental support.
