Cinema in Bayburt urban culture

Cinema embarks on its journey with the first screenings in Paris in 1895, when it was invented. A year after this date, it appeared in Istanbul and spread to the remotest corners of Anatolia following the proclamation of the Republic. The impact of cinema, as one of the tools of modernity shaping humanity, on cultures is significant. This study focuses on the cinematic activities in Bayburt, a city known for its unique culture in Anatolia, the works of Turkish Cinema in the context of Bayburt, and the culture formed around cinema in the city. The viewing adventure in Bayburt, which began with mobile screenings under the name "Güzel Ay Cinema" in 1927, continued with the opening of the first cinema hall "Ar Cinema" in 1949, and progressed with the addition of "Yeni Cinema" in the mid-1950s. Cinematic activities, which had a strong relationship with society in the 60s and 70s, experienced their golden age with "Çoruh Cinema" and "Yıldız Cinema," but came to an end in 1986. In the study, cinemas, which once became the focal point of social life, and all cinema operators from the past to the present have been identified. In the study, which includes the stories of the construction of venues, interviews were conducted with cinema workers and the city residents who have not forgotten the magic of the silver screen, in order to trace the cultural impact of cinema. On one hand, while revealing the place and importance of cinema as a socialization space in social life, the study also emphasizes the loss of venues where such strong bonds were formed in the past, and offers suggestions for preserving the city's identity. On the other hand, this study is an effort to uncover a long period rich in cultural heritage of the city of which archival records has disappeared in some way by compiling.
