The situation of memory tradition in Bayburt in the historical process the example of Oruçbeyli Qur'an Course

Efforts to preserve the Qur'an from any form of alteration have been maintained from the time of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to the present. During the Prophet's lifetime, the Companions played an active role in memorizing and safeguarding the Qur'anic revelation under his guidance. The practice of memorizing the entire Qur'an has continued throughout Islamic history and remains an important tradition in various Muslim societies today. This study examines the place of Bayburt within the broader context of Qur'an memorization (ḥifẓ) practices in Turkey, focusing specifically on the case of the Oruçbeyli Qur'an Course under the title "The Historical Development of the Tradition of Qur'an Memorization in Bayburt: The Case of Oruçbeyli Qur'an Course." The aim of this research is to outline the historical development of the memorization tradition in Bayburt, to identify how this tradition is maintained in contemporary settings, and to determine the challenges encountered in the process. The study employs a qualitative research design using a case study approach. Data were collected through document analysis, interviews, and observations. The scope of the research is limited to Qur'an courses providing memorization training in the province of Bayburt. The study analyzes the historical background of religious education and Qur'an memorization in Bayburt, the transition from traditional madrasas to modern Qur'an courses, and the number of memorizers produced by these institutions. It also examines the general condition of the Qur'an courses and the experiences of instructors involved in memorization training. Additionally, the role of local support mechanisms in the establishment and functioning of these courses constitutes one of the key findings of the research.
