Investigation of the potential effects of some essential oils on various cancer cell lines

Although cancer is one of the most important health problems today, it has also become a public health problem due to its high prevalence and lethality. Cancer is defined as uncontrolled cell proliferation with the most basic expression. Although existing cancer drugs have a very important place in cancer treatment, new drugs with effective and low toxicity are needed. It has been reported that many essential oils have antioxidant activity and have anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic and antiproliferative effects. Essential vegetable oils are considered as an opportunity for innovation in pharmaceutical studies. Within the framework of this thesis study, it has been observed what kind of effect different essential oils have on cancer cell lines. In this study, the potential effects of these essential oils on the A2780 ovarian cancer cell line, HT-29 colorectal cancer cell line and MCF-7 breast cancer cell line were examined by using clove, thyme, juniper and fig seed essential oils. For all three cancer cells, it was observed that the vitality level of the oils decreased significantly and killed the cancer cells. In MTT data analyzes and microscope images, it was observed that the cell viability decreased depending on the increasing doses and cell line of the essential oils that we used at different concentrations. In the migration analyzes for A2780 ovarian cancer, HT-29 colorectal cancer, MCF-7 breast cancer cells, it was observed that cell migration did not occur, but at the end of the forty-eighth hour, the viability levels of the cells decreased significantly. In line with these results, we predict that the essential oils used in the study have some potential effects on cancer cell lines and that more comprehensive studies on the subject will contribute to cancer treatment.
