Examine the relationship between the state of participation in care and the mood profiles of mothers whose babies were hospitalized in the intensive care unit and postpartum depression

INTRO AND PURPOSE: The thesis aimed to examine the relationship between the state of participation in care and the mood profiles of mothers whose babies were hospitalized in the intensive care unit and postpartum depression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case study, the number of samples was determined as 84 by applying power analysis. To collect research data "Personal Identification Form", "Care Participation Scale", "Mood Profile Scale" and "Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale" has used. The data, after getting permission from the ethics committee and ethics institution between 15 April 2021- and 1 September 2021 were collected from mothers whose babies were treated in the neonatal intensive care unit of a public hospital and who met the inclusion criteria. In the analysis of data, frequency distribution, descriptive statistics, t-test, Mann Whitney U test, one-way analysis of variance (One Way ANOVA), Kruskal Wallis test, Levene test, "multiple comparison test" (Bonferroni or Tamhane's T2) tests, Bonferroni and It was applied to Tamhane's T2 test. FINDINGS: The mean age of the participants is 29.27±6.46, 39.3% of them are high school graduates, and 31.0% are college/university graduates. It was determined that there was a statistically significant (p<0.05) difference between mothers' educational status, employment status, monthly income level, delivery type, and participation in care. t was determined that mothers mostly wanted to get support from nurses/midwives and they received support from nurses/midwives the most. Mothers' Mood Profile scale score and Edinburgh postpartum depression scale score were found to be low in our sample. A statistically significant (p<0.05) positive correlation was found between the mood profile scale and the Edinburgh postpartum depression scale score. In addition, it was determined that the depression level of the mothers affects their participation in care. CONCLUSION: Having health problems in the baby causes complex emotions such as anxiety, sadness, fear, anxiety, and anger in the mother. In the study, it was concluded that there is a relationship between the mother's mood, her participation in the care of her baby and the level of postpartum depression.
