An alternative search of the body – space relationship through the everydayness of the city: Tensions - releases

Coinciding experiences that are created within spatial constants are elements that trigger the body's desire to create its own experiences. The body that interferes with which has been designed may cause various spatial deviations. This action which can be defined as the solidified state of an individual response, is valuable in terms of bringing a new perspective to the long debated concept of space, as well as being an important aspect that shapes the dynamic structure of urban context; because it can be argued that the notion of space holds many hidden values beyond what is designed. A space which holds meaning far beyond the act of construction, evolves into a state that creates a tension with the body; when taking physical shape by means of visions that form within the mind. In this sense, it is predicted that contemplating the tension which is thought to exist between the designed space and daily life, and which enriches the urban context by triggering new experience possibilities; may help in re-conceptualizing space. The aim of this study is to reexamine the space by uncovering the tense relationship between body and space. The study emphasizes that body and space have become two concepts which both bear each other into existence but at the same time repel each other. The historical traces behind this case is intended to be discovered through this research. By planning to glance at the body-space relationship through the window of social, scientific and physical context, the discussion is carried out through the concepts of space, body, experience and daily life. The triangulation points that were discovered through the disintegrations at the end of each chapter of this thesis have composed the pattern of relationships directed towards the spatial perspective that is achieved in the end. The context that is discovered as a result of the exchanges and the tension relationship between body and space have given the opportunity for future discussions on spatial and bodily experience.
