Abstract (EN)

The main aim of the study is to determine the ruling on tattooing, which is a historical and current practice, in Islamic law. It is aimed at stating the cause (illah) of tattooing in fiqh and therefore its provision in the light of the narrations from the Prophet (pbuh). For this purpose, classical fiqh works and hadith commentaries have been used. The study consists of three parts. The first part sheds light on etymological and historical background of tattooing. It concludes that the tattoo is as old as the history of humanity, and it was made by many nations in the past and today in line with the objectives such as to be beautiful, to be protected from evil spirits, to belong to a group, to be protected from evil eye, and to carry religious symbols on their bodies. The second part of the study provides the different views of the sects in the classical fiqh works and the views of the scholars in the hadith commentaries. The third chapter of the thesis discusses the possible causes of the tattoo ban. In conclusion, it is permissible to apply the tattoo for medical purposes according to the majority of the jurists whereas its ruling has been determined to be haram due to reasons such as changing the creation, damaging human dignity, harming the body, and exceeding the limit in the desire to beautify oneself.
