The durability of buildings is of critical importance for maintaining structural integrity and ensuring longevity against environmental effects. Carbonation is a process in which concrete reacts with environmental carbon dioxide, resulting in a reduction in its alkalinity and leading to the corrosion of steel reinforcements. In this study, two methods were employed to measure the carbonation depth in concretes subjected to accelerated carbonation. The first method involved the classical measurement technique using a phenolphthalein solution, while the second utilized an optical fiber-based measurement technique. It was observed that the carbonation depths could be accurately determined based on color intensity analysis of the results obtained from optical fibers. Furthermore, the physical and mechanical properties of the concrete were examined, revealing that carbonation reduced porosity and water absorption rates while enhancing mechanical strength. The study concluded that the classical method and the optical fiber-based method yielded largely comparable results in measuring carbonation depth. Based on the findings, it can be stated that measurements performed using optical fiber technology represent an accurate and practical method.
