The role of libraries in museums as information environment and the museum libraries in Türkiye

Technological improvements of the information age and requirements emerging in the information societies, has caused alternations in the sense of museum curatorship. These alternations, which lead museums from the conception of object-focused to the conception of information-focused, the role of museum libraries, became more important than ever been in the past, while providing museums with the function of an information institution. Museum libraries have been going for society by extending their service mass, while performing the duties as being an extension of the museum object collection with their collections and contribute to the museum information environment. Fulfilling these functions effectively is due to providing necessary infrastructure conditions and a coordinated service policy with museum. In the research conducted in the context of the thesis, due intelligence is done by explicating the domestic and foreign museum library examples through this angle and evaluations and suggestions have been developed for the museum libraries in Turkey. The Questionnaire technique was used in the research. As the conclusions of the research, in the majority of the examples on abroad, it has been seen that the museum libraries have requisite infrastructure resources and they contribute directly to the museum information environment. When the findings of the research are evaluated through the viewpoint of Turkey, it has been determined that administrative units of museums are determining by the viewpoint of libraries? conditions and service policies. Generally, in the libraries of the state museums; infrastructure defectiveness and problems related with services and going-public issues have been found. However in the museum libraries which are affiliated with private foundations, it has been observed that these deficiencies have been overcome drastically. It has been reached such a conclusion that the situation of the museum libraries is related with museum curatorship conception that museums embraced and museum libraries? conditions are determined in accordance with the administrative units appertained to them.
