Examining internet addiction levels of pre-service Computer Education and Instructional Technologies Teachers in terms of certain variables

The purpose of this research is to investigate Computer Education and Instructional Technology Department pre-service teachers' internet addiction in terms of various variables and to examine of the correlation among internet addiction, academic procrastination, and time management strategies. The research is a quantitative study using correlational survey model as a descriptive research model. The sample consist of 327 pre-service teachers enrolled to Computer Education and Instructional Technology in Karadeniz Technical University in the spring term of 2014. The data were gathered by four data collection tools including personal information form, internet addiction scale, time management inventory, and academic procrastination scale. SPSS 21 statistical software was used during analyzing data. Descriptive statistical techniques, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation test, and regression test were employed to analyze the data.The results of the study showed that there was no pre-service teacher considered to be pathological Internet use in the sample of the research. Pre-service teachers were divided into two groups as no showing symptoms and limited showing symptoms of internet addiction. Internet addiction levels of pre-service teachers differed significantly according to gender, modes of teaching, daily internet use, purposes of internet, preferred web site. On the contrary, the internet addiction levels of pre-service teachers did not differ according to class level and experience of using internet. The results revealed a significantly negative correlation between levels of internet addiction and time management strategies of pre-service teachers. here was no difference between levels of internet addiction and academic procrastination. In addition with this finding, the results showed that academic procrastination was significantly correlated with time management strategies.
