Abstract (EN)
Natural ventilation, which plays an active role in removing pollutants that deteriorate the indoor air quality of buildings and providing fresh air, has a special place in green building design as it saves space and reduces the energy and maintenance costs of mechanical ventilation. This study was carried out to reveal the role of windows positioned on different facades of buildings and different ventilation rates in removing pollutants inside the building. The experiments were carried out in a test room with dimensions of 0.4x0.7x0.4 m (width.length.depth) and a total of 12 ventilation openings of 4 cm x 4 cm on the side and top surfaces. The effectiveness of the position of the window openings on the room surfaces, through which the fresh air enters and exits the room, allowing the initial CO2 concentration of 5000 ppmv in the test room to be reduced to 500 ppmv, was examined using three different air flow rates. The results obtained from the study show that increasing the air flow fed to the indoor environment significantly reduces the time required for the removal of pollutants, but this effect varies depending on the entry and exit points of the air. When air inlet and outlet points are located on opposite sides of the room while the rate of pollutant reduction is highest, it has been observed that this rate slows down if the incoming air is expelled from the side surface or upper ceiling of the room. The results obtained show that in order for natural ventilation to be effective in building design, it would be beneficial to install windows in the direction of the prevailing wind and on the opposite side of the building. Placing windows on building facates in this way will reduce the turbulence that creates resistance to air flow within the building and allow pollutants to be expelled in a shorter time.
