Football fandom as a subculture: Çarşı fans' ferception of violence in football

Abstract (EN)

On this study football fandom is approached as a subculture and attitudes of "Çarşı" fan group members towards violence in football and policies designed to prevent violence are tried to be understood. For that reason firstly a conceptional framework related to fan subculture is determined and also on findings part themes are determined by following these concepts. Then a general framework is determined for the historical process of violence in football and causes of violence in football, and it is tried to be understood with the findings of field research carried out in the scope of legislation and precautions to prevent violence in football. On this study qualitative method is used and face to face interviews are done. Moreover, field observation and various online sources ara utilised on this study. Based on the data collected in this scope Çarşı fan groups represent a subculture with their use of language, daily life styles, in group and intergroup behaviours, values and norms that they have adopted. From this point of view violence in football, the policies designed to prevent violence in football and applicability of these policies are tried to be understood from fan perspectives.
