Evaluation of the undergraduate nursing students' experiencesin team based learning model and examination of self-directed learning levelstowards theoretical teaching of surgical nursing at a foundation university: A mixed method study

Team-based learning model (TBL) is a frequently used method in nursing education as it contributes positively to academic success and student satisfaction. The study was carried out with the mixed method in order to examine the experiences of the students on the TBL model in the theoretical teaching of surgical diseases nursing and their self-directed learning levels. Data were collected with Information Form, Team-Based Learning Student Assessment Insturment (TBL-SAI), Self-Directed Learning Scale and Semi- Structured Interview Form. The research was carried out in three stages. In the first stage, the Turkish validity and reliability study of TBL-SAI was carried out with 165 students. In the second stage, the experiences and self-directed learning levels of 93 students enrolled in the surgical diseases nursing course were examined. In the third stage, focus group interviews were conducted with 12 students determined by purposive sampling method in order to examine their experiences with the TBL model in depth. As a result of the study, Turkish validity and reliability study of TBL-SAI consisting of 23 items with three factors was realized. It was determined that the students had positive experiences with TBL and their self-directed learning levels were high. In addition, it was determined that there was a positive and highly significant correlation between the TBL-SAI and the Self-Directed Learning Scale score (r=0.778, p=0.000<0.05). In the qualitative study, three main themes were determined: "Student experience with TBL", "Contribution of TBL method to student development" and "Contribution of TBL method to surgical nursing".
