The effect of training based on Jennings' disaster nursing management model on the knowledge status of disaster nursing and management among nurses working in primary healthcare institutions

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the effect of training provided to nurses working in primary healthcare institutions, based on Jennings' Disaster Nursing Management Model, on their status of knowledge in disaster nursing and management. Materials and Methods: The research was designed as a true experimental study with a pretest–posttest control group design. The population of the study consisted of 94 nurses working in primary healthcare institutions in the city center and districts of Siirt. Since the entire population was included in the study, no sampling method was employed. To establish a clear distinction between the experimental and control cohorts, nurses working in 14 Family Health Centers and 1 Community Health Center (CHC) were assigned to the experimental group, while nurses working in 15 FHCs were assigned to the control group using a randomization method (46 experimental, 48 control). Data were collected between October 2024 and March 2025 using the Nurse Descriptive Information Form and the Disaster Nursing and Disaster Management Evaluation Form. Nurses in the experimental group received a four-session training program, delivered by the researcher in their institutions at two-week intervals, based on Jennings' Disaster Nursing Management Model. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, chi-square test, dependent samples and independent samples t-test. Results: According to the enterprise scheme measurement data, the mean total score of the Disaster Nursing and Disaster Management Evaluation Questionnaire was 208.54±9.26 in the experimental group and 198.91±15.13 in the control group. A statistically significant divergence was observed between the mean scores of the respective groups (p=0.000). Conclusion: Training provided to nurses working in primary healthcare settings based on Jennings' Disaster Nursing Management Model increased their level of knowledge regarding disaster nursing.
