Cbt efficacy in primary insomnia and general clinical characteristics of primary insomnia

Abstract (EN)

Fifty percents of populatıon suffer from insomnia a term of life. Primary insomnia is an important subgroup that suffer from insomnia chronically. Disfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep, hyperarousal known as etiologic and maintining factors for chronic insomnia. CBT can have long lasting effects on insomnia by focusing on this subjects. İn this study it is aimed to investigate CBT efficacy in primary insomnia and general clinical characteristics of primary insomnia. Onset sample consist of 52 individuals. Questionnaires which examined socio-demographic data, sleep diary, ISI, PSQI, DBAS, BDI, BAI and for general clinical characteristics psychiatric interview based on DSM-IV were applied. 16 of 52 individuals were followed up for 1,5 months. İn this time we administered a treatment comprised of CBT and pharmacotherapy. After treatment we applied the questionnaires second time. On the other hand we didn?t interfere in 9 individuals and applied the questionnaires second time too. Rest of the onset sample didn?t complete the study. Data were analyzed by SPSS program. After treatment 16 individuals only had a significant decrease on PSQI and DBAS worry-helplessness subscale scores. 9 individuals didn?t indicate significant change any of the scores. For loooking general clinical characteristics most of the individuals had cognitive-physical hyperarousal and anxiousperfectionist personality traits. 69 İn conclusion, although getting improvement on sleep quality after treatment we didn?t get any change of disfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep. The outcome suppot that insomnia is a thought distortion primarly rather than sleep disorder. But our study have many limitations for evaluating CBT for primary insomnia.
