Production and characterization of Ti-5Nb-5Sn alloy for biomedical applications

It is anticipated that Ti6Al4V alloy, which is one of the most used alloys in biomedical applications, causes abrasion on bone tissue. In this study, Ti-5Nb-5Sn(0-3)Mo alloy was produced by using Beta (β) phase stable builder and Niobium (Nb), which has no toxic effect, instead of V, and Tin (Sn) element was used instead of Aluminum. Powder metallurgy, which is advantageous in terms of easy forming and less cost, was used as the production method of this alloy. Afterwards, the effect of production stages on alloy properties. Nb, Sn doping to Ti alloy and Mo ratio on microstructure and mechanical properties were examined. A new biomaterial was developed with a unique alloy ratio Ti-5Nb-5Sn1Mo, Ti-5Nb-5Sn-2Mo, Ti-5Nb-5Sn-3Mo, which wasn't studied beforehand. XRD, SEM images were taken, EDS analysis, density measurement, contact angle measurement, particle size, measurement and wear tests were performed. Nb and Sn metals were well dissolved in Ti after 2 hours ball-free grinding and 8 hours ball-grinding. 1%, 2%, 3% Mo additive to Ti-5Nb-5Sn alloy: reduced contact angle, reduced hardness of metal powders; surface roughness, friction coefficient, wear rate of metal alloys increased. Particle size was increased by 1% Mo and decreased by 2% and 3% Mo. The relative density increased with 1% Mo and decreased with 2% and 3% Mo.
