Irene the first woman emperor of the Byzantine Empire (752-803)

The Byzantine Empire became the longest political institution of the Middle Ages. Both the rulers and the people of Byzantium were known as instinctively conservative, and Byzantine historical sources generally focused on political, administrative and military events. In the Byzantine Empire, the rulers, army commanders and church leaders were men, and therefore Byzantium was defined as a patriarchal society, and women were not mentioned in the sources. In such a society, using the title of basileus (emperor) and not basilissa (empress), Irene, the first woman ruler, had a very important position in Byzantine history. In fact, in this study, we aim to explain how Irene is a monarch alone.
