Determination of factors affecting postural stability after kidney transplantation

Objective: Assessment of postural stability, peripheral muscle strength, proprioception, functional capacity, physical activity; determination of factors associated with postural stability and factors affecting postural stability after kidney transplantation. Methods: 40 kidney transplantation patients (KTP) and 40 healthy subjects were included in the study. Postural stability was evaluated by Biodex Balance System. The strength of knee extensor, ankle dorsiflexor and elbow flexor muscle groups were measured using Lafayette digital hand dynamometer and hand grip strength was measured with Jamar hand dynamometer. Digital goniometer was used to assess proprioception and Six Minute Walk Test was used to evaluate functional capacity. Physical activity was determined with International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Results: Sway index during postural stability tests was higher in KTP than healthy individuals (p<0,05). Muscle strength, functional capacity and physical activity were lower in KTP than healthy individuals (p<0,05). Postural stability was correlated with age, Body Mass Index (BMI), renal functions, laboratory findings, muscle strength, proprioception, functional capacity and physical activity in KTP. It was determined that the factors affecting postural stability in KTP were age, ankle dorsiflexion muscle strength, phosphor, hemoglobin and potassium. Conclusion: Postural stability was found to be impaired in KTP. Postural stability was correlated with age, BMI, renal functions, laboratory findings, muscle strength, proprioception, functional capacity and physical activity; it was affected by age, ankle dorsiflexion muscle strength, phosphor. Improvement of these factors should be aimed in order to enhance postural stability; individualized physiotherapy programs should be designed.
