Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of induced mental fatigue prior to a simulated bocce match on psychophysiological responses. A total of 40 bocce athletes (age = 23.34 ± 4.01 years; height = 171.12 ± 8.98 cm; body weight = 67.51 ± 13.85 kg) voluntarily participated in the study. Before data collection began, participants were informed about the procedures, and anthropometric measurements were taken. Official bocce competition rules and match formats were followed. The Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) was administered before and after the games. At the end of each set, players' ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), visual analogue scale (VAS), and enjoyment scale scores were recorded. According to the findings of the present study, mental fatigue increased perceived exertion and mental fatigue levels during the match, while decreasing the enjoyment experienced by the bocce players (p < 0.05). Based on mood responses, an increase in negative mood states such as anger and fatigue was observed following mental fatigue induction, while vigor significantly decreased (p < 0.05). However, in matches played without prior mental fatigue, no significant changes in mood states were observed pre- to post-match (p>0.05). After matches played under mentally fatigued conditions, only vigor levels were significantly lower compared to non-fatigued matches (p<0.05). These results may help coaches and sport psychologists better understand their athletes and take appropriate measures when necessary. Understanding the impact of mental fatigue on athlete performance can also help guide training program design more effectively.
