Özet (EN)

This study aims to examine whether 8th grade students at central primary schools located in Bolvadin Distrcit are able to comprehend and produce word classes in Turkish appropriately. It has also been intended to scrutinize the effect of gender, verbal academic self level, performance in the Turkish class, socio-economic situation and parents? education background on learning of word classes.The universe of the study are composed of primary schools in Boldavin Distrcit, Afyonkarahisar. The sampling is made up of three schools, Atatürk Primary School, Gazi Primary School and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Primary School. The participants of the study were 143 8 th grade students who were given ?Verbal Academic Self Scale developed by Y. KUZGUN? and Survey of Reading Habits of Primary School Students and Educational and Socio-Economic Background of families designed by the researcher were applied. The participants were asked to write about free topics which would not be more than only one page. During writing, the researcher and the class teachers observed the participants. After all writings were brought together, words were extracted from the writings and then were written on word cards and classified in accordance with word classes in Turkish. All data regarding word classes were computerized and were analyzed through SPSS program. Grade reports that showed participants? performance were also incorporated into the analysis.Key words: Word classes, gender, verbal academic self level, performance in the Turkish class, socio-economic situation and parents? education background
