The geotechnical aspects evaluation of usability in landfill layers of boron wastes

Waste clay which is obtained from Eskişehir Kırka Boron Works, causes sizable environmental problems, as well as being the potential risk for soil and groundwater. Therefore, it is important to re-evaluate of this clay. In this study,waste clay and waste clay/bentonite and waste clay/waste tire mixtures were aimed to investigate the availability of the impermeable layer of landfill. The geotechnical properties of waste clay and waste clay's mixture forms was determined in laboratory and according to Regulation of Sanitary Landfills were investigated availability in impermeable layer. After determining the water content of the waste clay, for the feasibility of experiments waste clay is ground after drying. The physical properties (specific gravity value, Atterberg consistency limits and grain size distribution) and the mechanical properties (standard proctor test, unconfined compressive strength, swelling percentage and permeability coefficient) of the waste clay was defined. After the geotechnical properties of the waste clay is defined, the availability of the occurring mixtures mixing with bentonite and waste tire was investigated as impermeable layer in landfills. The plasticity index, optimum water content, unconfined compressive strength and hydraulic conductivity coefficient of waste clay/bentonite and waste clay/waste tire mixtures which mixed in different proportions was determined, and tried to determine the most suitable sample. Finally, the experimental studies was terminated with made leachate works with determined most suitable samples. As a result of studies, the availability of waste clay as impermeable layer has been proven in I., II. and III. class landfills.
