Factors that obstacle participation in leisure evaluation and recreation activities: The case of Sinop University

This study aims to determine the leisure time tendencies of university students and the factors that prevent them from participating in recreational activities. In this context, an attempt was made to reach the students studying at Sinop University and determine their opinions through the survey form prepared. Survey technique was used in the data collection process of the research. In this study, a survey consisting of five sections and 42 questions was used. In the selection of the research area, especially the university students' knowledge, consciousness and awareness about tourism, recreation and leisure, the presence of a Recreation Management department at Sinop University and the presence of students in the field of education, Gastronomy and Culinary Arts and Tourism Guidance undergraduate level tourism. The fact that the departments continue their active education, the presence of students studying at associate, undergraduate and graduate levels both on the central campus and in the districts, and the prediction that there may be differences between these groups have been decisive. The research data collection process consists of students who can be reached between September 10, 2023 and December 31, 2023 and attend active learning and classes. In this study, simple random sampling method, one of the probability-based sampling methods, was used to determine the individuals to be included in the sample. The online survey prepared to ensure an acceptable sample size (384 participants) for the universe size was delivered to associate, undergraduate and graduate students studying at Sinop University through their academic advisors. As a result of the research; It has been determined that the majority of university students have 16 hours or more of free time per week, that they sometimes have difficulty in making use of their free time, and that they spend their free time by participating in social events and home activities. The majority of the university students who participated in the research evaluated the recreation areas owned by the university as insufficient, used the recreational areas owned by the university for 1-5 hours on a weekly basis, evaluated the recreation areas owned by the province of Sinop as partially sufficient, and stated that they spent 1-5 hours weekly in the recreation areas of Sinop province. It has been determined that they spend their free time outside the university campus areas. In addition, university students consider lack of time, transportation problems, lack of facilities, individual psychology, lack of friends and lack of information as obstacles to their participation in recreational activities and activities.
