Investigation of water quality of Bostancilar Pond (Eflani-Karabük) in terms of fisheries

In this study; It was aimed to determine the water quality and pollution of Bostancılar Pond in Eflani district in Karabük province and to determine the aquaculture potential. Accordingly, physical and chemical water parameters used to determine water quality were measured between June 2016 and May 2017. These measurements were made separately for three stations representing Bostancılar Pond. These stations were chosen as the southwestern side, the northwestern side and the entrance point of the Bostancılar Pond (Northeast of the Pond). During the study, water samples were taken from these three stations once a month and the obtained twelve-month average values (general average, standard deviation, seasonal average) were examined. In order to determine water quality in water samples taken at these three stations; temperature (oC), dissolved oxygen (mg / L), salinity (ppt), pH, electrical conductivity ((µs / cm), suspended solids (mg / L), chemical oxygen demand (mg / L), biological oxygen demand (mg / L), chloride (mg / L), phosphate (mg / L), sulfate (mg / L), sulfide (mg / L), sodium (mg / L), potassium (mg / L), total hardness (mg / L), total alkanite (mg / L), magnesium (mg / L), calcium (mg / L), nitrite (mg / L), nitrate (mg / L), ammonium salt (mg / L), iron (mg / L), lead (µg / L), copper (µg / L), cadmium (µg / L), mercury (µg / L), nickel (µg / L), zinc (mg / L) 28 physicochemical parameters were analyzed. The data of the obtained mean annual physicochemical parameters were statistically compared between the seasons. As a result, it was determined that the Bostancılar Pond has class-III water quality according to the Water Quality Management Regulation (SWOMR). In addition, although it is understood that there is no major pollution problem in the pond, it has been determined that it is under pressure of pollution in sundry months. In terms of aquaculture, it can be suggested that the current water quality situation is suitable for the cultivation of cold-water species such as trout.
