Functions of botanical gardens and determination of visitor preferences; the example of Ankara Atatürk Botanical Garden

This thesis aims to examine the functional roles of botanical gardens and identify visitor preferences through a case study of the Atatürk Botanical Garden in Ankara. The study explores the scientific, educational, recreational, and conservation-related functions of botanical gardens, emphasizing their importance in urban life. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed, with visitor surveys used to analyze usage purposes, expectations, satisfaction levels, and demographic characteristics. Findings indicate that most visitors attend the botanical garden for nature interaction, relaxation, and aesthetic experiences. However, core functions such as scientific education, environmental awareness, and child-oriented learning activities are found to be underrepresented. This suggests that the garden's full potential is not being utilized and highlights the need to expand its functional diversity. The thesis also provides detailed evaluations under the topics of infrastructure characteristics, staff structure, types of events, and educational and outreach activities. In conclusion, the Atatürk Botanical Garden is identified as a significant asset for ecological and social sustainability, yet requires more strategic planning and management to reach its full potential.
