Abstract (EN)

In 1938, the unity of language was disrupted when Russian authorities forced Turkish communities to switch from the Latin-based alphabet to the Cyrillic alphabet. This was followed by the outbreak of World War II, and Turkish intellectuals began to discuss the dream of liberating Turkistan and uniting it with Turkey. However, this vision was replaced by the idea of achieving cultural unity rather than political unity after the Soviets emerged victorious in the war, and discussions began on the ways and means of uniting the Turkic world culturally. Turkey's policy towards Turkistan in the face of these two factors was examined in the journals Bozkurt, Yeni Bozkurt, Çınaraltı and Doğu, and the methods and policies that needed to be followed to achieve the ideal of cultural unity between Turkistan and Turkey were conveyed with reference to the intellectuals of the period. Although there were political and intellectual groups that viewed any unity achieved in the Turkic world as a threat to the country, the intellectuals who wrote for the journals included in the study and who held unifying ideas argued that this was not a threat, but rather that uniting with the Turkic world, even in cultural terms, would strengthen Turkey. In this context, it was argued that the first step towards achieving cultural unity between Turkey and Turkistan should be the re-establishment of linguistic unity, and it was clearly stated that the most important step to be taken in this regard was to find common ground in language and writing. Although the establishment of linguistic unity was seen as a priority, strengthening the cultural ties of society within the Turkic world and establishing a Turkic national consciousness, especially through education, was considered to be very important for the stability and sustainability of cultural unity. It was agreed that the strengthening of the Turkic nation in all areas was possible through Turkic national consciousness, and that the Turkic cultural unity to be established could only become unshakeable in this way. It was emphasised that the Republic of Turkey, the only independent Turkish republic at the time, needed to attain a respectable position in world politics in order to establish cultural unity, and that it should serve as an example and model for other Turkish communities. As a result, the goal was to re-establish the linguistic unity between Turkey and Turkistan, which had been severed in 1938, on a more solid foundation, and it was believed that this goal could only be achieved by making national consciousness and high moral values unshakeable. It was emphasised that the dream of political unity between Turkey and Turkistan should remain an unattainable ideal in the hearts of the Turkish nation and should always be kept alive, and it was concluded that national consciousness could only be sustained in this way.
