Özet (EN)
The aim of this study is to conduct an in-depth examination of the role that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) played in influencing British and global public opinion during World War II, and how it was utilized as a tool for propaganda during this period. This examination will cover the BBC's wartime broadcasts, the challenges it faced, censorship practices, and its conflicts with the government. The study intends to use as many primary sources published by the BBC as possible to uncover the policies and strategies the institution adopted to view and portray the war. During World War II, the BBC became a significant propaganda tool for the British government. With the onset of the war, the BBC increased its broadcasts to both the British public and the international audience. The primary aim of these broadcasts was to maintain public morale, support the war effort, and boost the morale of allied countries. One of the BBC's biggest challenges during the war was balancing its commitment to providing accurate and reliable information with the government's propaganda demands. Additionally, as a trusted broadcasting institution, the BBC had to continue its innovations to maintain its reliability and public trust. It has been observed that the BBC frequently faced censorship during this period. The British government established various censorship mechanisms to prevent the broadcast of news that could negatively impact the war effort or demoralize the public. The BBC had to navigate these censorship practices and often clashed with the government over broadcasting policies. Despite the government's censorship demands, the BBC sometimes resisted to uphold the principle of independent broadcasting, resulting in significant achievements that will be examined in this study. The purpose of the thesis is to detail how these conflicts and censorship practices shaped the BBC's broadcasting policies and its efforts to maintain its independence. The examination, using as many officially published primary sources by the BBC as possible, aims to understand the BBC's wartime broadcasting strategies, propaganda techniques, and the challenges it faced. In this context, the thesis will thoroughly explore the role of the BBC during World War II and the impact of this role on public opinion. By providing a historical perspective on the BBC's wartime broadcasting policies, its relationship with the government, and censorship practices, the thesis will contribute significantly to understanding the relationship between media and propaganda.
